Quick update: after Slamboree, it’s announced that Goldberg suffered an injury and has to vacate the title. A tournament starts to crown a new champion and the final will take place at GAB. While I am not usually a fan of vacant titles or belts getting dropped without actual victories, this at least sets the tone for the rest of 1999 as Goldberg will be chasing the title he never lost. Imagine 1999 WCW actually having a goal
WCW The Great American Bash 13.06.1999
Baltimore, MD
1. WCW World Heavyweight Title Semifinal: Sting def. Bam Bam Bigelow (11 mins)
So, Sting and Bigelow have been feuding quite a bit in the grand scheme of the Sting/DDP storyline, but this is the first time they face each other one on one. Bigelow, despite not beating Goldberg, had a good run so far and looks like a threat to Sting. They have a short but energetic match. Bigelow misses a corner splash, so Sting hits 3 different stinger splash. Bigelow is hurt, so Sting hits the deathdrop and wins the match
2. WCW World Heavyweight Title Semifinal: Diamond Dallas Page (w/ Kimberly) def. Kevin Nash (10 mins)
This wouldn’t be a great one and it’s also heel vs heel, so it’s not like I am digging it very much, but this is all I have left pretty much (when it comes to starpower). We can tell the story of DDP and Nash going way back, but still don’t seeing eye to eye after years of WCW and never being on the same side, really. This is also kept short, because it wouldn’t be great and DDP has another match to complete. Nash gets distracted by Hogan’s theme and DDP pins him with a dirty roll up
3. WCW Cruiserweight Title: Chavo Guerrero Jr. (c) def. Juventud Guerrera (12 mins)
After the semifinals, the card can settle down a bit and the cruiserweight title match can be next. Chavo has been champion and living a dream, also teaming up with uncle Eddie since his return. Juvi, however, is on a winning streak and the announcers talk about how 1 year ago Juvi was the champion, while Chavo was barely featured. Juvi is still somewhat dominating the match and Chavo is the underdog. Chavo uses his knee to stop the juvi driver and wins with his feet on the ropes
4. WCW United States Title: Rick Steiner def. Booker T (c) (w/ Arn Anderson) (10 mins)
So, despite Booker and Rick not being on the same side really, they kind of have helped each other recently because they both fought Scott Steiner. Rick was actually instrumental in injuring his brother, so Book could get the US Title back. This rematch get signed and, again, we can go back to the Steiners vs Heat feud to hype it. It’s a babyface match, but Scott Steiner appears and this time hits Booker with a pipe, so Rick wins the match. Arn is shocked and Rick is the new champion
5. Eddie Guerrero def. Psychosis (9 mins)
A quick and nice cruiserweight division match on the PPV. Eddie has just returned and this will be his PPV comeback after the bad car wreck he had. Psychosis was Eddie’s lackey, but says he has no respect for Eddie, spending one year talking about the lWo and the Mexicans, but now thanking the American fans for cheering for him after his comeback. This can be a nice deal and I think a first time ever on PPV as well. Eddie wins with the frog splash and is now back as a solid babyface
6. Ric Flair def. Chris Kanyon (13 mins)
This is easily the biggest match in Kanyon’s career, I mean it doesn’t even get close. The Triad vs Flair & Sting feud has caused Flair to lose a few matches and Kanyon was the catalyst sometimes, with a few run ins, so Naitch loses his sh!t and dares Kanyon to be a man for once and face him on one one. This is similar to the feud Flair had with Syxx, daring an annoying and sly youngster to step up. This should be a good match too and I need Flair to get some momentum, the figure four wins it
7. WCW World Tag Team Titles Elimination Match: Rey Mysterio & Billy Kidman (w/ Torrie Wilson) def. Raven & Saturn (c) and Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko (w/ Arn Anderson) (20 mins)
This is a rematch from the previous PPV, to continue the feud between these two teams. This time, however, it would be under elimination rule and this might be the match of the year in WCW so they get tons of time. Malenko and Benoit are eliminated first, when Saturn pins Malenko and Benoit is p!ssed. The heels are in charge, but Raven takes a tag and Saturn pushes him into Mysterio’s 619 by accident. Kidman hits the shooting star on Raven for the title change
8. WCW World Heavyweight Title Tournament Final: Diamond Dallas Page (w/ Kimberly) def. Sting (decision match) (15 mins)
So, we have the main event and the winner will be the champion. Sting has been the champion and the franchise of the company for a decade, while DDP is still chasing the title belt and it drove him crazy to the point of his heel turn happening. They have also been feuding, so this is quite perfect for me, for timing and attraction. They had an awesome title match on Nitro in 1999, hope that can be done here. Sting fights Kanyon and Bigelow off, Flair tries to help, but DDP kicks Sting low and hits the cutter to finally win the title
