Flair to WWE makes sense, I'd say.

Wasn't expecting the Shane twist, but it was fun. That was a really interesting way to weave your backstage and on-screen stories together, and I'm excited to see where it goes.

Also, the Starrcade video was Incubus last night when I got to the post. Then it was Britney Spears when I actually read the show this morning--and now it's back to Incubus.

I may be losing my mind.

The evening before Starrcade: Glory

Eric Bischoff knocks on a hotel door, one that he covertly booked to sneak in a special guest. The door opens, and a smile comes to both men’s faces.

“Hey, yo.”

Eric quickly enters the room and has a seat. Scott Hall is enjoying some room service for dinner, but Eric has some serious matters to talk over.

E: “So Scott, what happened? I tried to call you up numerous times last summer, trying to get you back. Kevin said he wanted you back or he would leave… and when you never answered, he left. What happened?”

S: “Eric, I never got your messages. My phone was disconnected while I was working in New Japan, and when I got back to it after I got canned, then all your messages flooded in. I wasn’t sure you’d even answer when I called, or you’d’a just hung up on me. Kev told me he was getting out of his deal so we could both go work with Hunter. That was all he told me. He used to be my best friend… but I think Kev played both of us.”

E: “So it was just him getting out of WCW? All he had to do was ask. I needed to save the money anyways.”

S: “Speaking of money… yo, this check you gonna start giving me is gonna clear, right? Everyone’s known WCW was in the poor house since Turner was out.”

Eric nods positively, thinking back to closer to the beginning of the month…

“That’s an awful lot of money I’m not gettin’ anymore there, Eric.”

Scott Steiner isn’t very pleased with what he’s seeing, but Eric was ready for this.

E: “Scott, you know I’ve been good to you as long as you’ve been in WCW. You practically ARE WCW by this point, just as much a part of the company as Sting and Flair. I know you could probably go to Vince and get whatever you want, but you remember what happened last time better than anyone. You know he holds grudges that last for decades. I know this isn’t a lot of money compared to your last contract, but we don’t have Turner money to lay out anymore. I hope you’ll stay, but I won’t blame you if you go. What will it be?”

S: “You drive a good point… how about creative control?”

E: “How about not?”

S: “Well you know I could get that from Vince.”

Actually he probably couldn’t, but Eric wasn’t about to say that right now.

E: “What would it take to not get that?”

S: “More money than is on here.”

After some haggling, Eric finally finds a figure that Scott can agree with. This, along with guaranteeing that “Big Poppa Pump” would never be less than a main eventer and would exclusively work in-ring, was enough to keep Scott on the payroll (at a substantial lower rate) for at least the next year. So that’s roughly $200,000 a month savings.

The next day, it was Lex Luger. “The Total Package” actively winced at the low figure that Eric came to him with, and wasn’t all that enthused with being told that his role is to start passing the torch to younger stars. But he wouldn’t work any house shows, and it’s not as if he could go to McMahon. Luger signed with little resistance, allowing WCW roughly $180,000 extra to play with each month.

A few days later, Eric met with “The Stinger.” Sting was making $300,000 a month, and when Eric came to him with only $35,000, he thought it was a rib.

E: “I’m sorry Steve, I wish it was. But if you look down here, you’ll see that this contract allows you to take time off the road whenever you want.”

S: “Yeah, in exchange for putting over anyone you want me to. I don’t plan on doing any jobs for Vampiro like Russo had me doing last year.”

E: “And I don’t plan on taking it that far. Yes, you’ll probably lose to some people when the time calls for it. But it will be in getting WCW ready for a future where you won’t always be able to be ‘The Franchise’ anymore… and I hope that’s a long time from now. And I put in this that you’ll be covered for travel, which is something that only your contract has in WCW right now.”

S: “Guarantee me this for a few years, not just the one year deal you gave Lex… and I guess you’ve got a deal.”

Eric smiles, telling Scott not to worry about a thing. He just saved a bunch of money, definitely enough to warrant a star like him to come back.

E: “I have some more questions, though. Your run was on top. Why would you leave?”

S: “I tell ya, mang, it wasn’t my fault. They said I was wrestling stoned and drunk, but it was never my fault! I was tryin’ to stay sober, I know I don’t have many chances left in me. But it was Shawn, and it was Vince, and Kid, and maybe Kev too. They knew I was trying to keep straight, but they’d change my water out with vodka, or lace my food. And then Vince would fine me when I was wrestling while I was messed up, when they caused it. There’s no way I could ever prove it, but they sabotaged me, just to laugh about it. They sabotaged my last chance, used me for a goddamn joke. I am sick and tired of being a joke.”

E: “So you’re done with the party life?”

S: “I learned my lesson. I was workin’ with Dallas up there when I wasn’t hangin’ with the clique boys, and he was really opening my eyes to how bad my life had gone, how far down I was spiraling. Now that you gave me another chance, I wanna make him proud.”

E: “You do that, and you’re gonna make a lot of people proud, Scott. You do right by me in this run, and maybe your name will stop being on all those ‘greatest wrestler to never hold a World title’ lists.”

Scott smiles, “You mean it, E?”

E: “Absolutely.”

That may have been a weird forum thing? Incubus is the show theme, while Chyna is using (a Jimmy Hart version of) the Spears song.

Asa had asked me what Scott Hall's lifestyle was like. He has not gone to rehab, and I have not reformed him completely. However, with what happened to him (there were quite a few times that I fined him and screamed at him as Vince before firing him) I dropped his habits by a few points. So he could totally flub this and I end up having to cut him again, but he is worth the headache to an extent because he is easily replacing Flair in all of my national battle stats (not that they mean much right now yet) and in the creative meeting.

New content! Get excited!

I am trying out some new formatting, now that we are into a new year. Splitting up the WCW shows from WWF shows, so that show posts are not so much to take in, the Iceisle skins for each different show, I am not sure how I will like it once I get more into things but we are in a new year so I want to try new things.

Week 1, 2002: New Years Eve, December 31, 2001

Scott Steiner was in a mood backstage. When he was called on it by Chuck Palumbo, he took a swing at Palumbo, but it was a bad move as Chuck ended up getting the better of him. When Eric Bischoff was called in to rule on Steiner’s behavior, he gave a stern warning that this behavior is not being tolerated in the new WCW. Reports later said that nothing significant came of this.
Paul Orndorff was giving out tips again, this time teaching Mark Jindrak and Sean O’Haire some pointers on being a better heel, and gave some psychology pointers to Mike Sanders.
Joey Styles and Don Callis debuted as the new voices of WCW Monday Nitro! Styles is using a regular Sportscaster gimmick, while Callis played up a Genius (Cocky) character. They both were Very Good at their roles.
Billy Kidman is back to his standard Teen Idol gimmick, fans seemed to feel it initially has come off as Average. Lance Storm felt he doesn’t do as well in High Spot based matches. In some great news, Joey Styles and Mike Tenay were found to have pretty good chemistry when calling matches together.
Getting better at gimmick: Da Angel

Worldwide is “all Gabe, all the time” for now as Chris Lovey is not only part of the Panel, but also is on commentary for the matches along with Scott Hudson. He will likely be replaced on the Panel, but we need to find someone who can fill his role there before doing that.
Chavo Guerrero Jr. is starting to look a little stale in his gimmick.
Getting better at gimmick: N/A
Tully Blanchard: “Samoa Joe is going to be a star. Push him as hard as you can.”
