Meanwhile, The Godwinns defeat The Smoking Gunns in early July to become the new WWF Tag Team Champions and will defend against the Headbangers in their rubber match. Kane makes his WWF debut earlier in the summer but with Paul Bearer out of commission due to an attack by Kane himself, it's hard to obtain any explanation as to where Kane fits in until Undertaker himself tells the story of their family tragedy. Nevertheless, the Phenom teams up with WWF Champion Shawn Michaels & Vader to take on the team of Kane, British Bulldog & Owen Hart in the main event of the PPV. With Alundra Blayze leaving for WCW, the women's title becomes vacant and Sable wins it in a one-night mini-tournament on Superstars against Jacqueline. Date: December 15, 1996 Location: West Palm Beach, Florida Venue: West Palm Beach Auditorium Shawn Michaels regains the WWF Championship in late November in controversial fashion, where the integrity of Earl Hebner is put into question, following the finish. Earl is stripped of his refereeing license but Shawn goes to bat for Earl, saying that Earl did nothing wrong. As a result, Earl is integrated in the main event as "Special Guest Referee" in which he'll regain his refereeing license if he calls the match down the middle. Meanwhile, Rocky Maivia upsets Hunter Hearst Helmsley on a special Thursday edition of Raw to win the Intercontinental Championship and Helmsley invokes his rematch clause for the PPV. Brian Christopher defeats Taka Michinoku on Raw to win the Light Heavyweight Championship and Taka also gets a rematch at the PPV.
