AEW 2010:History Rewritten

Match: AEW World Tag Team Championship: The British Invasion © vs. The Motor City Machine Guns

Notes for match:   As this is the first match of the card, the two teams should work together to try and work the crowd, getting them primed for the rest of the show that will come tonight. 

Notes about the match: Unfortunately the plan to work the fans may not have been the right one, as the fans were already pretty fired to start the show.  While it was a decent opening match, there is no doubt that it was a slow match that did not allow the Guns to really show off their style.  When they did finally let loose, Brutus Magnus had a tough time keeping up with the other workers which was also pretty noticeable, I think.  The closing moments though were pretty exciting with Shelley and Williams each countering the others moves, before Shelly managed to get Williams in a Crossface.  Sabin then cut Magnus off from breaking the hold, and one submission later and the Tag Team belts had no holders.  

Result: In a decent match, The Motor City Machine Guns defeated The British Invasion in 18:06 when Alex Shelley submitted Doug Williams with a Crossface. The Motor City Machine Guns become the NEW AEW World Tag Team Champions.

Match: AEW X-Division Championship: The Amazing Red © vs. Homicide

Notes for match:   Consequences Creed will be out at ringside to support The Amazing Red and to make sure that Eric Young who will accompany Homicide does not interfere. 

Notes about the match: It was no surprise to see The Amazing Red have his speed and high flying on display.  Young and Creed for the most part did their job of making sure that the either didn’t interfere, although Homicide also made sure that he showed his annoyance at Creed whenever he tried to get the fans behind Red.  This was important in setting up the finish which I must commend Homicide for as he did it incredibly smoothly.  He hit Red in mid stride with a Lariat, and then slid under the bottom rope and nailed Creed with another Lariat on the floor.  Pausing to stand over Creed gave Red a chance to revive, so when Homicide did get back into the ring and went for Da Gringo Killa, Red was able to spin out of it and turn it into a Code Red.  While Homicide kicked out of that it did leave him vulnerable for a follow up 718, and then an Infrared which was enough to seal the victory for Red.  

Result: In a decent match, The Amazing Red defeated Homicide in 13:06 by pinfall with an Infrared. The Amazing Red makes defence number thirteen of the AEW X-Division title.

Grade: 47

Match: Desmond Wolfe vs. Jeff Hardy

Notes about the match:   To be honest, I was not sure what to expect out of this match as I was not sure if their styles would clash too much.  There’s no doubt that it was a bit of an awkward pairing, although the fan excitement about seeing Hardy again helped to counter some of that.  Wolfe played up his cockiness taunting Jeff Hardy when he was on top, but Jeff managed to overcome that and used the Swanton Bomb to get the victory over Wolfe. 

Result: In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Jeff Hardy defeated Desmond Wolfe in 10:47 by pinfall with a Swanton Bomb. 

Grade: 69

Match: 20 Man Battle Royale

Additional Information:   Winner gets a shot at the AEW World Championship on the next episode of AEW Dynamite

Notes for match: Featuring: Akira Raijin, ‘Black Machismo’ Jay Lethal, Brother Devon, Brother Ray, Christopher Daniels, Cody Deaner, Consequences Creed, D’Angelo Dinero, Eric Young, Hernandez, Homicide, James Storm, Jesse Neal, Matt Morgan, Rob Terry, Robert Roode, Scott Steiner, Shark Boy, Suicide and Tomko.

Notes about the match:   This match began quickly as Homicide decided he wanted to some revenge on Consequences Creed, so he entered the match and went right at Creed….who dropped down and pulled the top rope so that Homicide’s momentum took him right over the top rope to the outside.  Creed played up being in such a stage of shock that he was an easy elimination for Scott Steiner, who then badmouthed him (thankfully censored).  With that sequence out of the way, the next part of the story that Court laid out was having Eric Young marshalling the force of The World Elite as he yelled at Raijin and Terry to attack everyone while he watched.  While this did result in Shark Boy being eliminated, it did not last long as Beer Money worked together to eliminate big Terry, while Dinero got Raijin out of the match leaving Young on his own.  The next big moment was Lethal slamming Neal, before going to the top with the big Macho Man elbow while everyone was watching.  Lethal stood up and spun around….and Scott Steiner eliminated him.  After Neal is eliminated by Dinero, the next focus is on the tag teams as Beer Money and Team 3D come face to face.  That is broken up by Hernandez attacking Team 3D (eliminating Brother Devon) and Morgan going after Beer Money (eliminating Robert Roode).  Out of this Brother Ray and Storm worked together to hit Hernandez with a 3D before eliminating him.  That does not last long as Morgan eliminates both men, before Scott Steiner and Dinero work together to eliminate Morgan before fighting with each other.  Young mostly kept out of the way but now as it was starting to get down to less wrestlers, although he did manage to eliminate Tomko.  Suicide and Christopher Daniels had spent most of the match taking shots at each other, before they “accidentally” worked together to eliminate Deaner, before Daniels eliminated Suicide leaving the Final Four.  Young once again tried bossing people around, yelling at Daniels and Steiner to eliminate Dinero, which almost looked like it was going to work…and then Scott nailed Young with a Steinerline.  As Scott stood over him, Dinero hit the DDE and eliminated Scott from the match.  Next gone was Eric Young.  Dinero and Daniels teased eliminating each other, but Daniels finally managed to get Dinero out to earn the title shot at Dynamite after what may or may not have been an accidental low blow.  

Result: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Christopher Daniels won a battle royal in 14:44. The other members of the 'final four' were D'Angelo Dinero, Scott Steiner and Eric Young, with D'Angelo Dinero being the final elimination. D'Angelo Dinero got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Match: AEW Women’s Championship: Tara© vs. Hamada vs. ODB

Additional Information: One fall to a finish

Notes for match: Prior to the match, Awesome Kong should attack ODB, sending her into the ring post and then catching her with a Spinning backfist, leaving ODB at a disadvantage before the match even begins.  

Notes about the match: While paramedics check on ODB outside of the ring, most of the action involved Tara against Hamada.  Of course ODB did get involved at around the half way mark and things settled into a three way match.  The end saw Hamada and ODB work together to put Tara down, which then allowed Hamada to take advantage of the injured ODB to pick up the win and the Women’s Championship!

Result: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Hamada defeated Tara and ODB in 12:46 when Hamada pinned ODB with a Fisherman's Driver. During the match we also had Awesome Kong run in and attack ODB. Hamada wins the AEW Women's title.

Match:   Abyss vs. Bob Holly

Additional Information: Hardcore Match

Notes for match: Prior to the match Dr. Stevie and Raven will come out and build up their chosen mystery opponent for Abyss, before introducing Bob Holly! 

Notes about the match:   While there was the usual assortment of weapons involved in this match, although Abyss has been told not to use thumbtacks int his match, it was also about Bob Holly being his stiff self and just beating on Abyss.  While it looked good for the most part, there was also moments where both men appeared to be winded which took away some of the momentum of the match.  The finish of the match saw a table set up in the corner, and Abyss about to send Holly through it when Rhino slides into the ring and drives Abyss right through the table with the gore!  Holly then pulled Abyss out of the wreckage of the table to deliver the Alabama Slam and to pick up the victory.   

Result: In a decent match, Bob Holly defeated Abyss in 12:44 by pinfall with an Alabama Slam following interference from Rhino.

Grade: 58

Match: Samoa Joe vs. Sting

Notes for match:   While this should be one of the most popular matches on the card, I want to make sure the crowd is not too worn out prior to the Main Event so Joe and Sting should slow the story down to calm the crowd down a bit. 

Notes about the match: As expected, the fans were very into this match and were especially happy to see Sting out there.  They worked a slow story style that had the fans actively engaged and on the edge of their seat.  When Joe tries to go for the Muscle Buster the first time, Sting managed to fight it off and then got some separation with a kick to the Joe’s face.  That allowed Sting to drop from the top turnbuckle and caught Joe for the Scorpion Deathdrop.  When Joe got his foot on the bottom rope it meant that the three count did not count, so it continued on.  Sting showed a fire with a couple of Stinger Splashes in the corner, but on the third attempt Joe countered with the STO and now he took over in the match.  There was a battle over both men going for their signature submission moves, the Coquina Clutch and the Scorpion Deathlock.  The finish saw Sting on the top turnbuckle, looking to hit a crossbody, but Joe dropped him on the top turnbuckle with an Enziguri, and from there Joe was able to connect with the Muscle Buster to get the three count.  

Result: In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Samoa Joe defeated Sting in 13:01 by pinfall with a Muscle Buster.

Match: AEW World Championship: AJ Styles © vs. Kurt Angle

Additional Information:   Prior to the match there will be a video to hype this match, and then Ric Flair should get a big entrance in front of his ‘hometown’ crowd.  He will pause at the entrance for the fireworks, where he will be cradling the big gold AEW World Championship belt in his arms.  

Notes for match: Both men have been made aware that there are no plans to have these two match up against any time in the near future, and to really go out there to try and put on a great match to close up their history.  Outside of the gaga for Flair, they have also been told to just focus on the match itself, telling the story as they choose, but to make sure they stick with wrestling.

Notes about the match: One of the luxuries of practically no one knowing who I am, I was able to walk out into the crowd and get a good and up-close view of this match.  To say that I was enthralled would be an understatement as these two delivered exactly the match that I wanted from them.  They started off slowly with amateur wrestling moves, before they started to escalate the competitive nature of the match with stiffer and stiffer strikes.  Things really took off when they did a series of reversals that began with German Suplexes, and then turned into AJ flipping out and setting Angle up for the Styles Clash, but Angle managed to roll that into an Ankle Lock.  When AJ made the ropes that only served to frustrate Angle, and now the straps were down as he went for another Ankle Lock.  

But this proved to be a mistake as AJ managed to get his hands on the Strap and reversed it into a close two count.  It looked like the next big mistake came from Styles as he went to the top turnbuckle with Angle down, just to have Angle pop up and go for the top rope Angle Slam.  In mid-air Styles reversed that into an Inverted DDT which got an incredibly close two count!  Slowly they came to their feet and Styles tried to lift Angle up for the Styles Clash, but when Angle blocked that Styles changed it into a Stacked Powerbomb for a pin, which then turned into a Jackknife pin attempt, which then ended in an Angle Slam for a close two count!  Angle was on the ankle quick though and as Styles struggled, Angle pulled Styles into the middle of the ring and locked on the Grapevine Ankle Lock!!  This time the struggle was incredible, but Styles made it to the bottom rope!  Instead of breaking the hold, Angle pulled Styles off of the ropes, and Styles managed to get in a Pele kick!  That stunned Angle long enough that Styles was able to connect with the Styles Clash for two!  In desperation AJ Styles went outside of the ring, and managed to connect with a Forearm Smash off of the ropes which put Angle down.  Slowly Styles went to the top turnbuckle, and then came flying off of the top with the Spiral Tap!  ONE….TWO…THREE!!    

Result:  In an exceptional match, AJ Styles defeated Kurt Angle in 28:13 by pinfall with a Spiral Tap. AJ Styles makes defence number twenty of the AEW World Heavyweight title.

Grade: 79

Match #1: Alex Shelley vs. Doug Williams

Notes for match: Shelley and Williams should go all out in order to steal the show.

Notes about the match: These are two of my favourite wrestlers in the world right now as I really like their styles and feel that they are someone who I want to use a lot going forward.  This match did not disappoint from an in-ring standpoint, although work will need to be done in order to get the fans to buy into both men.  In the end the key was to make sure that either man could conceivably win, with Doug Williams getting the victory as a measure of vengeance from Revolution and building towards their Tag Team rematch next week.

Result: In a decent match, Doug Williams defeated Alex Shelley in 13:09 by pinfall with a Chaos Theory.

Grade: 65

Notes for match: Being a match that would fall into the X-Division the wrestlers were told to go out there and give the fans as much high energy, high spots, as they could.

Notes about the match: The four men did manage to go out there and do everything they could do to try and hook the fans, with the ending of the match being the focus as Creed managed to almost get a pin fall on Homicide twice.  Finally Homicide just slid out of the ring and grabbed a steel chair, before sliding back into the ring and throwing the chair at the face of Creed which earned him a disqualification.  Homicide was not done though as he grabbed the chair and nailed Creed with it a couple more times before The Amazing Red managed to get it away and cause Homicide to back down.  

Result: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, The Amazing Red and Consequences Creed defeated Homicide and Akira Raijin in 7:54 when Homicide got disqualified after going into a rage and refusing to stop assaulting Consequences Creed.

Grade: 57

Match #3:   Alissa Flash vs. Roxxi

Notes for match: Ranallo and Callis should do their best to remind the fans who Flash was, including referencing her time as Raisha Saeed.

Notes about the match: While it was a back and forth sort of match, it was clear that Flash was the better of the two workers, although getting fans to care is still a problem.  In the end, this match was more about just getting Flash out there in front of the fans as the big deal will be when the match is over when she walks over to the announcers table, wipes the makeup off of her face with her hand and wipes it on the table, before yelling that she won’t be wearing masks, she won’t be wearing makeup, and from now on you can call her by her real name…Melissa Anderson!

Result: In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Alissa Flash defeated Roxxi in 7:39 by submission with an Inverted Cloverleaf.

Grade: 46

Match #4:   CW Anderson vs. Kurt Angle

Notes for match:   This match should be set up to calm the crowd down. 

Notes about the match: This match was all about getting Angle out there, looking good, and reminding the fans of how great a wrestler he still is after the loss against AJ Styles in preparation of moving him into something different going forward.

Result: In a decent match, Kurt Angle defeated CW Anderson in 7:37 by pinfall with an Angle Slam.

Grade: 67

After the commercial Kurt Angle should still be in the ring, and while he speaks he will talk about how he has beat everyone, but he is not quire sure if he still has a place in this post-Revolution world, which is when he should be interrupted by…..

…MR. ANDERSON!  Mr. Anderson will get into the ring and speak about how he is new here, but he has been watching the archived footage and it seems that to make an “impact” you have to go after the top dog, and that now history will repeat itself as Anderson is here to do just that….and then he will feint a headbutt on Angle, before kicking him low and dropping him with a Mic Check!

Match #5: Brutus Magnus vs. Chris Sabin

Notes for match: The point of this match is to help advance the story that is being told on the way to the rematch between the MCMG’s and The British Invasion.

Notes about the match: This match actually managed to exceed my expectations a bit and made me reconsider my thoughts on Magnus a bit.  For the most part this match went back and forth, but when it looked like Sabin had Magnus in trouble on the outside, Terry got between him and Sabin.  That resulted in Sabin shaking his head and going for a plancha on Terry, which allowed Magnus to take over and resulted in him getting the victory.

Result: In a decent match, Brutus Magnus defeated Chris Sabin in 8:30 by pinfall with a Twisting Samoan Drop after Rob Terry interfered.

Grade: 50

Match #6: Desmond Wolfe vs. Suicide

Notes for match: This match was supposed to directly tie into an appearance from Jeff Hardy, but his demons have already begun to show as he arrived to work so high that he was sent home immediately.  While I really want to have him around so that he can help elevate Wolfe up the card, but his health and wellbeing is more important and we will be looking at what it will take to get Hardy on the right path.

Notes about the match:   This match really blew me away with how involved the fans got into it, and just how good it was.  This was proof positive of why I feel Wolfe can be a big star in this company.  After the submission victory, Wolfe was not done as he kept the London Dungeon locked on longer until finally he was forced to break the hold, but even then he still kicked Suicide in the arm once more, before looking into the camera and asking if Hardy was watching. 

Result: In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Desmond Wolfe defeated Suicide in 7:47 by submission with a London Dungeon.

Grade: 60 

Match #7: AEW World Championship: AJ Styles© vs. “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels

Additional Information: D’Angelo Dinero will be at the announcers table

Notes for match: D’Angelo Dinero should make sure to talk at the commentary table about how he isn’t quite sure that the low blow from Daniels was “accidental” like he has claimed.

Notes about the match: While I was a bit disappointed with their match last week, and part of that could have been the response from the burned-out crowd, this one more then made up for that.  These two men went out there and gave everything they had, including Styles putting Daniels through a table off of the top turnbuckle with a Styles Clash which was finally enough to put to rest the Styles/Daniels feud.

Result: In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, AJ Styles defeated Christopher Daniels in 18:29 by pinfall with a Styles Clash through a table. AJ Styles makes defence number twenty-one of the AEW World Heavyweight title.

Grade:   69

Quick Notes:

In a terrible match, Tomko defeated CW Anderson in 8:28 by pinfall with a Running Big Boot. (38)

A recap video on the career in the company of Melissa Anderson, climaxing with her declaring that she was changing her name and will be just herself going forward, ending with the announcement she would be the guest of Mike Tenay’s Professor’s Corner next Dynamite.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Tara and ODB defeated The Beautiful People IV in 8:08 when Tara pinned Lacey Von Erich with a Widow's Peak. (48)

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Rhino defeated Jesse Neal in 7:54 by pinfall with a Gore. (53)

Dr. Stevie joined Rhino in the ring and spoke about his plan to build an army that would eliminate Abyss and who better then the mercenary Holly, and the Manbeast Rhino, although Rhino did not look overly happy about being there.

In a poor match, Team 3D defeated BJ Whitmer and Shaun Ricker in 7:38 when Brother Devon pinned Shaun Ricker with a 3D Dudley Death Drop. (46)

Video is played hyping that Jeff Hardy will have a match next week on Dynamite, and for the AEW World Tag Team Championship rematch between the Motor City Machine Guns and the British Invasion

Match #1:  Damaja vs. Sting 

Additional Information: Mick Foley will be at the commentary table, and during the match the camera will show both The Band and The Motor City Machine Guns watching this match at separate entrances.  

Notes for match:  As this will be the first match on the card the wrestlers should work the crowd to set the plate for the rest of the evening. 

Notes about the match:  These two did exactly what I asked them to do as they got the show off to a good start.  Seeing Sting in the match is going to be a bit rarer going forward so the hope is that when he is in there it will be a treat to the fans, and they definitely appreciated him here in this match.  

Result: In a decent match, Sting defeated Damaja in 8:06 by pinfall with a Scorpion Death Drop.

Grade:  67

Match #2: ‘Black Machismo’ Jay Lethal vs. Homicide

Notes for match:  High spots for this match!   

Notes about the match:  These two have a history with each other, so it was not surprising that they were able to go out there and put on a decent match that was meant to get Homicide over and give us some time to talk about the triple threat match at AEW Blood & Guts.  Also some hints are starting to come out about AEW Destination X and its emphasis on the X Division over the next month.

Result: In a decent match, Homicide defeated 'Black Machismo' Jay Lethal in 8:14 by pinfall with Da Gringo Killa.

Grade: 52

Match #3: Awesome Kong/Hamada vs. ODB/Tara

Additional Information: The winning team can have a second at ringside for the AEW Womens Championship match at AEW Blood & Guts, while the losing team will be barred from ringside.

Notes for match:  The commentary team should make sure to really talk about how one of these women would have the edge at AEW Blood & Guts if they are able to have someone at their side.   

Notes about the match:  These four had managed to develop a bit of a chemistry the last few months so this match went pretty well, and having Tara get the victory was very important as she has been on a bit of a losing streak lately, although that could change in an instant in a few days….

Result: In a decent match, Tara and ODB defeated Hamada and Awesome Kong in 7:46 when Tara pinned Hamada with a Widow's Peak.

Grade: 54

Match #4: Abyss vs. New Jack

Additional Information: Hardcore match

Notes for match:   Commentary should mention that the opponent is actually a surprise, and is part of Dr. Stevie’s plan to remove Abyss from the table, and then play up just how hardcore New Jack is when he makes his way out.

Notes about the match: New Jack brought the weapons to the ring in no surprise, but Abyss was ready for it and these two actually had a pretty good garbage brawl.  New Jack had asked if he could blade for this match and had been turned down as I have been saving the first bladejob in the AEW era for something special, but I was worried if he would listen or not.  But he did keep from blading so I was pleased by that, and the finish was pretty good as New Jack came off of the top rope looking to smash a guitar on the head of Abyss, only to be caught in the air and dropped with a Black Hole Slam.  As planned, Ranallo actually uses this moment to make the first mention of Jeff Jarrett in the AEW era.  Subtle, understated, will become more important in the coming weeks. 

Result: In a decent match, Abyss defeated New Jack in 8:26 by pinfall with a Black Hole Slam.

Grade: 58

Match #5: Bob Holly/Rhino vs. Hernandez/Matt Morgan

Notes for match:   Commentary should announce that there will be a four way tag team match at AEW Blood & Guts between Beer Money, Hernandez/Morgan, The British Invasion and Eric Young/Rob Terry with the winner getting a shot at the AEW World Tag Team Championship next week on Dynamite.

Notes about the match: A good back and forth match that did see a bit of a tag team miscommunication when Morgan hit Hernandez with the Carbon Footprint by accident.  After Morgan finished checking on him he turned around and walked into the Alabama Slam to give the victory to Dr. Stevie’s mercenaries.   

Result: In a decent match, Rhino and Bob Holly defeated Hernandez and Morgan in 8:20 when Bob Holly pinned Matt Morgan with an Alabama Slam.

Grade: 61

After the commercial Taz will be in the ring with three random wrestlers, one of whom was wearing a mask.  He will then introduce the newest signing to the AEW roster…

…DDP!  After his impressive one night showing DDP has been signed for the next few months to see how much may be left in his hand.  The whole point of this segment was Taz talking with DDP about wrestling finishers and how the Diamond Cutter was famous for the way that DDP could hit it from anywhere.  After showing that on two wrestlers, and talking about how the move works with impact and velocity, DDP picks the masked wrestler up on his shoulders….just to have the wrestler drop off of the shoulders of DDP…and hit the Mic Drop!  Pulling off the mask Mr. Anderson will reveal himself and start to kick DDP, until Kurt Angle comes running out from the back at breakneck speed, just to have Mr. Anderson drop out of the ring and make his way to the back while Angle is seething and checking on DDP.

Match #6: Cody Deaner vs. Suicide

Notes for match:   These two were told to go out there and calm the crowd down a bit prior to the Main Event.  

Notes about the match: These two went out and did exactly what they were supposed to do and let the fans down a bit, while still maintaining a decent reaction from the crowd.   

Result: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Suicide defeated Cody Deaner in 7:39 by pinfall with a Suicide Solution.

Grade: 51

Match #7: AJ Styles/D’Angelo Dinero/Jeff Hardy vs. Christopher Daniels/Desmond Wolfe/Samoa Joe

Additional Information: In order to make sure that this match ends with a victor there will be extra referee’s outside of the ring.

Notes for match:  With so much story wrapped up into this match, and hype for the PPV, these men should build up a spectacle over the 25 minutes while having time to interact with various opponents.   

Notes about the match:  After last week went off the air with chaos the plan was to try and hit things out of the park with this match, and in many ways it was a success there.  At the same time I didn’t want to have anyone take the pin from a PPV opponent hence why Joe pinned Dinero

Result: In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Desmond Wolfe, Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe defeated AJ Styles, D'Angelo Dinero and Jeff Hardy in 22:05 when Samoa Joe pinned D'Angelo Dinero with a Muscle Buster.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Velvet Sky defeated Roxxi in 7:39 by pinfall with a Double Knee Backbreaker. (54)

Rhett Titus stops by to visit Taylor Wilde with another rose and to wish her luck in her qualification match.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Sarita defeated Lacey Von Erich in 7:38 by pinfall with a Flying Cross Body. (38)

In a decent match, Taylor Wilde defeated Madison Rayne in 7:31 by pinfall with a Missile Dropkick. (52)
