Changes To WWF Commentary Table Due... Wrestlemania is a good starting point for many in the WWF, for new fans, it's a way to get into the company, see what it has to offer in terms of entertainment and athleticism and to experience the best the company has to offer. For the company itself, besides being the biggest show of the year, it is also a good point for the company to "start over" if there's a point for the company to implement changes, be it to the roster, the backstage area, or in this case the commentary table. Then post Wrestlemania is the perfect opportunity. So what's going down?
Rob Bartlett leaving It has been confirmed, both by WWF management and by the man himself, that the Raw before Wrestlemania will be the final appearance of Rob Bartlett on commentary. Rob was brought on to the show to try and bring his comedy stylings he was renowned for on radio to the WWF commentary table. However, Bartlett says he believes "It just isn't working." the comedy that might work on an early morning radio show doesn't seem to be translating well into a wrestling product and although WWF management did try to convince Bartlett to stay on longer and try to make things work. Bartlett believed it best for both himself and the company to part ways. Although he tells us he has "Enjoyed every moment of it" and has "Absolutely no regrets" about the short experience.
Randy Savage Also Stepping Away Wrestlemania is going to be a big moment for the Macho Man. It will be his official in ring return to the WWF and whether or not it will see him permanently returning to in ring action, or calling it a one and done experience is still up in the air. For Randy however, these past few months have brought a lot of self assessment on his position in the company and that fact that he believes he can bring more to the table. Whether that will be as an in ring competitor, or backstage as a road agent, or trainer after he gets his wrestlemania moment. The future of the Macho Man is unsure now, but what we can confirm with you, the fans right now is that like Rob Bartlett, the Raw before Wrestlemania will be Randy Savage's final appearance on commentary. What he does after that, is anybody's guess.
So Who Will Be Joining Vince? WWF management are still aiming for a three man group on commentary and have been discussing changes for some time now, especially once they got news of Rob Bartlett and finally, the news of Savage intending to leave the table, have brought the change more to the forefront of their minds. Obviously Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are a great pairing that the fans love and bringing them onto weekly television is a potential solution. However WWF management is still weighing their options. New play by play man Jim Ross will also be commentating at Wrestlemania in his announcing debut for the company and depending on how well he does, could see him being added to the Raw commentary table instead, as WWF management is aiming for something "New" at the commentary table for the flagship show and keeping the Brain and Gorilla as figureheads for the big events. Right now WWF management are testing Ross as a possible announcing position for Raw, having him commentate over taped matches backstage in preparation both for his Wrestlemania appearance and for the possible addition to Raw. Then, there is the case of adding a color commentator. WWF is exploring former wrestling personalities, to possibly emulate the style that was brought to the announcing booth when Jesse Ventura was by Vince's side. However, still pursuing a new and different feel. There are other commentator's that WWF is exploring to replace Bartlett's position. The commentary team may not be one hundred percent set in stone post Mania, it may switch around and test different personalities, or it may have one team put together for a few months to establish chemistry and test their ability at heightening the experience for the fans at home. Regardless, one thing is to be expected after Wrestlemania. WWF is planning to change a lot already and now, commentary is also a part of that.
