WCCW NEW YEAR STAR WARS 28.01.1984
San Antonio, TX
Attendance: 52021
TV rating: 0.21
Show rating: 84
Jim Ross and Gary Hart are opening the show with a preview of the card, but von Erichs and Freebirds are all over the stage fighting in street clothes! Referees struggle to get Roberts and Kevin separated, while the others reach the ring... and referee David Manning decides that the tag match can start now! (83)
DAVID VON ERICH & KERRY VON ERICH vs. TEDDY GORDY & MICHAEL HAYES
The match is chaotic since the bell rings, as all four men unleash on each other after a whole year of battles. Manning keeps reminding them about the rules and, after a few minutes, things settle down and the match gets a bit cleaner, even though the Freebirds cheat behind the referee's back every time they can. A long headlock keeps David in the heels corner and the aggressive Hayes busts him open, but Kerry gets the hot tag and turns things around! Hayes takes his cowboy boot off to hit Kerry, but David jumps on him and they roll out of the ring! Gordy wants to powerbomb Kerry, but he reverses it to a sunset flip! 1... 2... 3! The von Erichs are victorious! (80) (14:08)
On stage Gary Hart announces that Tommy Rich won't be at the show for a personal problem and asks Chris Adams to find a replacement in the World Tag Titles match. Before Adams can say anything, Mr. X interrupts and says that he's available. Adams doesn't know what to say, but X remarks that he's happy to tag with him after a hard match against Greak Kabuki and that says a lot about his attitude. Adams accepts and shakes X's hand (68)
BILL IRWIN vs. TITO SANTANA (w/ Sunshine)
We see a new side of Santana here, as he's upset at Irwin for his comments on Sunshine. Irwin finds this really amusing and keeps shouting rude things at his opponent's valet, getting Santana to lose his cool like never before when Irwin throws his robe at Sunshine and tells her to go get him a beer. Irwin really prefers the brawl, as he can prevail this way, but Santana proves that he's not weak at all and fights back shot after shot. Irwin seems in trouble and tries to leave the ring, but Sunshine blocks him and Santana hits him with a flying forearm for the 3! (75) (8:52)
Stan Hansen gets on the stage, while Devastation Inc. is in the ring, and announces his tag team partner: Butch Reed! (72)
STAN HANSEN & BUTCH REED vs. DEVASTATION INC. (w/ Skandor Akbar)
The announcers point out how Hansen chose an ideal partner, as Reed is a big man and will be able to go toe to toe with both Bundy and Murdoch, who seems a bit worried about this unexpected surprise. Hansen and Reed have never tagged before and their chemistry is not perfect, but they do really well and use the good momentum to annoy the heels and get a good offensive. Bundy tries to avoid Hansen as much as he can, so Hansen gets tired of it and follows him at ringside for a huge brawl! In ring, Reed is tired has no one to tag, so Murdoch manages to hit him with a bridging german suplex for the victory! (82) (11:00)
Backstage Bill Mercer interviews Ric Flair, Ted DiBiase and Bobby Heenan. Flair says that those Funks are savages, but they will be done with them after tonight: Flair already defeated Terry last month and DiBiase humiliated Dory Jr. last Thursday, so after tonight they will keep the belts and will never have to see those ugly faces again! (82)
THE GREAT KABUKI (w/ Arman Hussein) vs. MR. X
JR says that X has a lot of courage for agreeing to help Adams and wrestle twice, but Hart says that X might regret this as he can't underestimate his former client Kabuki. X keeps trying to outsmart Kabuki and to pin or roll him up to finish the match as early as he can, but this is not effective and only gets Kabuki angrier. X hurts his ankle by moving too fast and Kabuki keep hitting him there, also locking in a boston crab, but X reaches the ropes. X seems in trouble and slaps Kabuki, who reacts but misting X! The referee ends the match and X wins by DQ! (59) (6:45)
Postmatch Chris Adams arrives and Kabuki leaves. Adams wants to help X, who can't see as the mist went in his eyes despite the mask he's wearing. X pushes Adams away and leaves the ring while a towel is covering his head. The Midnight Express come out laughing and ready to wrestle, but Ricky Morton runs down and wants to be his partner! Gary Hart nods and the match is on! (62)
WCCW WORLD TAG TITLES
MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (c) vs. CHRIS ADAMS & RICKY MORTON
The champions are furious and threaten to walk away from the match to lose by count-out, but Robert Gibson gets on the stage and so MNX returns to the ring! Morton has the usual energy and vibe, but Adams seems still shocked about the two defections of tonight and it's quite hard for him and Gibson to synchronize their offense as much as they would like to. Morton does his best and hot tags Adams, who is clearly flustered and his head is not in the game, as he fails to capitalize on a big chance. Adams also turns his back on Eaton, who stops his offense and the MNX hit Adams with a double lariat to retain the titles! (73) (12:13)
On stage Bill Mercer interviews the von Erichs. Kevin compliments his brother for the victory and now he will defeat Buddy Roberts as well. David says that the other Freebirds will surely try to stick their noses into the match, but they will have Kevin's back as usual (80)
TEXAS DEATH MATCH
KEVIN VON ERICH vs. BUDDY ROBERTS
Nobody is at ringside despite the lack of DQs and JR wonders if that has something to do with the Freebirds' recent crisis or if it's just a strategy. It's a vicious match and both of them get busted open in the first few minutes. Nobody seems able to prevail at this point and Roberts fights and scratches to keep up with Kevin. Gordy arrives at ringside and Hayes reluctantly follows him from a distance... but Kerry and David also come down and another brawl is on! Hayes manages to slide in the ring with his cowboy, with both Roberts and Kevin getting up at the same time... Hayes hits Kerry, but Roberts had to move out of the way! Did Hayes mean to hit Roberts or Kevin? Hayes doesn't know what to do, but Roberts gets the boot from him and hits Kevin again right on the forehead! And Kevin cant' get up before the 10 count! Roberts wins! (81) (13:03)
Postmatch Gordy hugs Roberts and congratulates him, but Roberts just stares at a shocked Hayes! Hayes and Roberts go face to face and Roberts wants a handshake! Hayes hesitates, then sticks his hand out... but JIMMY GARVIN attacks Roberts from behind!!! Hayes joins Garvin in the beatdown, while Gordy seems confused! Hayes takes his boot again and finishes Roberts by hitting him in the face! Hayes and Garvin celebrate and so the does the not-so-sure Gordy! Jimmy Garvin has joined the Freebirds and Buddy Roberts is out!!! (77)
DOUBLE CHAIN MATCH
RIC FLAIR & TED DIBIASE (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. THE FUNKS
As predicted, Flair gets chained to Terry and DiBiase gets Dory Jr., even though Flair tries all he can to swap it in a fun little moment. The fans of course cheer for the Funks, who finally have the chance to punish the heels a bit after weeks of cheap shots and dirty words! Flair and Dory Jr. are bleeding from their foreheads and the chains are long enough to allow everyone to fight each other at the same time. Heenan pulls Terry's chain to save Flair from a pinfall and Terry falls, but then he irish whips Flair into Heenan, who falls backwards! In the meantime, DiBiase tries to reach for his black glove in his gear, but Dory kicks the chain, so DiBiase falls! Dory Jr. hits a piledriver! 1... 2... 3! The Funks win! (85) (16:55)
Postmatch Dory and Terry celebrate, while Flair drags DiBiase out of the ring and leaves! (87)
Show notes
- I can tell that we are really hot, as this could be considered a "B Star Wars" and it still drew the most fans I have ever had, even more than the loaded season finale that took place lost month. Terry, Flair and DiBiase were thanked during my post show speech
- I was really pleased with the main event and the way the 4 athletes managed to captivate the crowd. The babyfaces had to win to keep the story going
- The crowd also loved the opener and Roberts vs. Kevin. Roberts' win can be seen as an upset, as he's usually been the Freebird that took the fall, but I still believe in him and he can be an asset to the stable. Garvin took a month off after losing Sunshine, I think his addition makes the Birds even stronger, while Roberts is not done here as his victory proves
- Tommy Rich didn't show up as he prioritized a GCW event rather than Star Wars. This will probably mark the end of his WCCW run, but stay tuned. I had to make up something on the fly, choosing Morton to continue the RR/MNX feud seemed quite logic. It also connects with the Mr. X angle, that is bound to evolve soon
- I haven't signed Reed yet, but I probably will. I wanted to get a partner for Hansen for him to have another tag match before the feud blowoff, but it went really well and Reed played his part
- Well done to Santana and Irwin for finding great chemistry, as it was highlighted by the recent house shows
