AEW Dynamite #16
April 21, 2010
Location: The Grove of Anaheim in Anaheim, CA
Attendance: 700 (SELL OUT!)
TV Rating: 0.38 (--)
Match #1: Doug Williams/”The Rising Son” Okada vs. Jushin Thunder Liger/Sabu
Additional Information: Eric Young will be at ringside
Referee: Mark Johnson
Road Agent: Raven
Notes for match: These four men were given the mandate to go out there and work the crowd up, while also tightening the story heading into AEW Lockdown at the match between Sabu and Doug Williams for the AEW X-Division Championship.
Notes about the match: The focus of the match was Williams and Okada working the neck of Sabu when they were in charge of the match, while Sabu and Liger tried to fight back with some high risk spots (well more Sabu than Liger, although Liger can still move even at his age). The finish of the match saw Sabu going for the pin on Okada after connecting with an Arabian Press, but Eric Young had climbed up on the ring apron to distract referee Mark Johnson. Williams entered the ring and nailed Sabu in the back of the head with the X-Division Championship belt. This weakened the neck further, and allowed Okada to pick up the upset pin fall on Sabu after he connected with a German Suplex.
Result: In a decent match, "The Rising Son" Okada and Doug Williams defeated Sabu and Jushin Thunder Liger in 13:01 when "The Rising Son" Okada pinned Sabu with a German Suplex.
Grade: 69
Hype for the six man tag team match, specifically focused on AJ Styles getting his hands on Desmond Wolfe for the first time since his attack on Styles and Flair in the parking lot.
A segment with Taz where he explains using some photos what a torn bicep looks like, before he has Jerry Lynn join him with his arm in a sleeve and announcing that Lynn has a torn bicep after his match with Maritato and he will not be able to compete at AEW Lockdown in the #1 Contenders match for the AEW X-Division Championship.
Before the spotlight on Brutus Magnus, Mike Tenay will acknowledge his lack of success in getting through to Jeff Jarett, but promises he is not done yet. The spotlight will then focus on Brutus Magnus and his history in athletics (tennis and swimming), and his time as a Gladiator as Brutus Magnus promises to leave no one in his path as he vanquishes his opponents on his way to winning the AEW World Television Championship.
Match #2: Brutus Magnus vs. Jesse Neal
Additional Information: Spotlight Match
Referee: Mark Johnson
Road Agent: Scott D’Amore
Notes for match: Match should mostly just be a brawl as neither man is a superior technical athlete.
Notes about the match: This match was a big opportunity for Magnus to show what he could do on his own, and it went decent against an opponent like Neal. Things will get harder for him though as he faces D’Angelo Dinero in the first round of the AEW World Television Championship tournament.
Result: In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Brutus Magnus defeated Jesse Neal in 7:48 by pinfall with a Twisting Samoan Drop.
Grade: 42
Match #3: Awesome Kong/Hamada/Sarita/Taylor Wilde vs. Melissa Anderson/The Beautiful People
Additional Information: Rhett Titus should be at ringside cheering on the heel team, but will get chased away when ‘Black Machismo’ comes running out after Titus has tried to interfere too many times.
Referee: Earl Hebner
Road Agent: Roddy Piper
Notes for match: This match will feature some eye candy, some story telling, and some preparation for the PPV.
Notes about the match: While not a fundamentally great match, there was still a lot that went into this match with Taylor Wilde trying to get some revenge when she was in the ring, but also having to deal with Titus on the outside. In the end Anderson and Sarita were left in the ring with each other, after Kong pulls Hamada to the back to keep her safe, and Anderson managed to get the victory before she gets her title shot at AEW Lockdown.
Result: In a poor match, Melissa Anderson, Madison Rayne and The Beautiful People II defeated Awesome Kong, Hamada and Taylor Wilde and Sarita in 10:35 when Melissa Anderson pinned Sarita with an Air Raid Crash.
Grade: 44
Backstage AJ Styles will have a cameraman with him when he apologizes to Ric Flair, who will try to brush it off, but Styles will insist that Flair comes to the ring with him again to help make sure something like that does not happen again.
That same cameraman will then catch Larry Sweeney giving Hamada the riot act for getting them involved with the Beautiful People and telling her that is the last time she interferes in someone else’s business “because next time Kong will not be there to back you up.”
Match #4: Jeremy Buck/Max Buck vs. Scott Steiner/Sean Waltman
Additional Information: If The Band wins, whomever gets the victory will be the third man in Lethal Lockdown 2.0 at AEW Lockdown
Referee: Brian Hebner
Road Agent: Ric Flair
Notes for match: Match should be close.
Notes about the match: The story of this match involved working over Jeremy Buck’s back, injured last week by RVD, and so it is no surprise that the finish of the match saw Scott Steiner get the victory with the Steiner Recliner.
Result: In a decent match, Sean Waltman and Scott Steiner defeated Generation Me in 8:24 when Scott Steiner submitted Jeremy Buck with a Steiner Recliner.
Grade: 70
After the math Kevin Nash and Scott Hall will join Waltman and Steiner in the ring, where Waltman will act like he is very disappointed he won’t be in the match, but then they will all start laughing. That will bring out Mick Foley and Sting who will talk about how The Band might be laughing now, but they will not be laughing at Lockdown. “You are a bunch of wrestling legends, and so are we, but we need a different sort of legend for a match like Lethal Lockdown. We need someone who isn’t afraid of pain, someone who doesn’t just love violence…..we need someone who….INNOVATES violence….our tag team partner….
….TOMMY DREAMER!!”
Spotlight video with Tenay and Colt Cabana, with Colt saying that its true that he likes to have fun, but he also knows how to be serious when he needs to be, and the opportunity to become AEW World Television Champion is something worth getting serious over!
Match #5: Colt Cabana vs. Michael Modest
Additional Information: Spotlight Match
Referee: Brandon Tolle
Road Agent: Court Bauer
Notes for match: These two should try and put some comedy into the match between them so that the fans can get an idea of what Colt Cabana can be about.
Notes about the match: The comedy elements of this match did not work and the fans did not like it, but at the end of the day Colt got the victory on his way to the tournament for the AEW World Television Championship.
Result: In a bout that had terrible wrestling and non-existent crowd heat, Colt Cabana defeated Michael Modest in 8:24 by pinfall with a Colt .45.
Grade: 33
Roddy Piper will come out to the ring to soak in the fans adulation one more time, but as he is talking he will be interrupted by Mr. Anderson who will brag about ending Piper’s career. At that point Roddy will get “Rowdy” and poke Mr. Anderson in the eye before putting him down with a Sleeper. As Mr. Anderson is unconscious on his back all of a sudden Kurt Angle will coming out from the back yelling that he knows First Aid, and he will then proceed to start to check on Mr. Anderson……and will then start punching him in the face to wake him up! Paul Heyman will come out with security and EMT’s to get Angle off of him and force him to the back.
During the break Heyman will be yelling at Angle in the back, but Angle will hold up his "First Aid" training card and say he was just trying to help...and that is when Mr. Anderson will attack Angle from behind and the two will continue brawling while security has to break them up.
After Heyman is done dealing with Angle and Mr. Anderson in the back, he will be immediately confronted by Eric Young and Homicide with a demand that Homicide should take the place of Jerry Lynn in the match at AEW Lockdown with The Amazing Red and Consequences Creed. Heyman says he will talk with Red and Creed and if they are okay with it Homicide will be added.
Match #6: Abyss/Bison Smith vs. Bob Holly/Rhino
Additional Information: Hardcore Match
Referee: Brian Hebner
Road Agent: Brother Devon
Notes for match: Should be a hardcore brawl
Notes about the match: Bison Smith was another wrestler I wanted to get a closer look at while we were here in California and this seemed like an appropriate place to try him out. Unfortunately, in this match Rhino suffered an injury that looks like it might be serious and that slowed the match down a bit. The end saw Rhino and Abyss fighting (to hide the fact that Rhino was injured) which left Smith and Holly alone for the victory for Bob.
Result: In a decent match, Bob Holly and Rhino defeated Abyss and Bison Smith in 8:29 when Bob Holly pinned Bison Smith with an Alabama Slam.
Grade: 53
Backstage Generation Me will be getting looked after, especially Jeremy, when Shelley and Sabin will stop on the way to the ring to check on them. Max will get defensive and say it was too late, and Shelly will fire back they advised against the match but that Generation Me wasn’t listening. Finally Jeremy stopped the fighting and told the Guns to concentrate on their match and good luck against RVD and Booker T as they want another shot at the belts when that match is over.
Match #7: AJ Styles/The Motor City Machine Guns vs. Desmond Wolfe/RVD & T
Additional Information: Ric Flair at ringside
Referee: Brian Hebner
Road Agent: Hector Guerrero
Notes for match: Story telling is the important part of this match as it needs to hype up two PPV title matches.
Notes about the match: This was a great match as all six men went out there and put on a great performance with the action building as the match proceeded. Near the end of the match Desmond Wolfe left the ring to go after Ric Flair, which caused Styles to dive out of the ring and on to Wolfe and the two men fought to the back. In the ring that left the two tag teams facing off, and the end saw Booker T connect with the Axe Kick on Shelley to get the pin fall at the show came to a close.
Result: In a good match, Desmond Wolfe and Booker & RVD defeated AJ Styles and The Motor City Machine Guns in 17:07 when Booker T pinned Alex Shelley with an Axe Kick.
Grade: 77
Overall Show Grade: 71
