WCW US Tag Team Tournament Opening Round

Duane Gill and Barry Horowitz vs. The High Rollers

In a comedy match, The High Rollers (The Gambler and The Hustler) defeated jobber duo Duane Gill and Barry Horowitz in a Tournament Opening Round match in 4:49 when The Gambler defeated Duane Gill by pinfall with a Tag Double DDT.

The High Rollers advance to the quarter finals.

Steel Cage Bunkhouse Stampede Battle Royal Hype Video

A highlight video is shown to hype the 10-Man Steel Cage Bunkhouse Stampede Battle Royal at Spring Stampede.

The object is to throw the opponent out of the cage door for the elimination. These are often bloody matches, as weapons are allowed.

The participants are Randy Savage, Curt Hennig, The Warrior, Bam Bam Bigelow, Brian Knobbs, Jerry Sags, Kevin Sullivan, One Man Gang, Jim Duggan and Steven Regal.

The winner is awarded a large Bronze Cowboy Boot trophy and an title shot at Slamboree.

WCW US Tag Team Tournament Opening Round

The Fantastics vs. Badd Company

Paul Diamond controls Bobby Fulton with a Powerslam, but is met with a hip toss. Tommy Rogers gets a near fall on a School Boy. Pat Tanaka knee lifts Rogers on the back from the apron and tags in to deliver a few strikes. Rogers fights back with a few hip tosses, but doesn’t follow up.

Rogers nearly pins Diamond with a roll up off the ropes. Tanaka comes off the top to strike Rogers and hammers away more on Rogers. Fulton tags in to hit an elbow drop after Tanaka was tripped to the mat. Tanaka is being worked over by Rogers and Fulton with the focus being Tanaka’s arm. Rogers nearly wins following a middle rope Crossbody.

Tanaka cheap shots Rogers while the referee was distracted and Diamond begins to pummel him in the corner. Tanaka comes off the top but is met with a Big Boot to the face by Rogers. Fulton gets the hot tag and cleans house. Tanaka and Diamond are sent into each other and Tanaka goes to the floor after a Double Dropkick. Double Snap Suplex on Diamond. Fulton nails Tanaka with a Rocket Launcher to get the win.

In a bout that offered some good ol’ rasslin’, The Fantastics defeated Badd Company in a Tournament Opening Round match in 9:57 when Bobby Fulton defeated Pat Tanaka by pinfall with a Rocket Launcher.

The Fantastics advance to the quarter finals after eliminating one of the favorites.

“Mean Gene” interviews Big, Bad and Dangerous w/ Col. Parker and Harley Race, about Spring Stampede.

Harley Race doesn’t believe there is anyone who can beat Big, Bad and Dangerous. Race considers Vader and Bam Bam Bigelow to be the two most dangerous men in WCW.

Col. Parker puffs his Cuban cigar and predicts that Bam Bam Bigelow is the winner of the Steel Cage Bunkhouse Stampede Battle Royal. Harley Race then says that there is no way that Sting stand a chance in the No Holds Barred Match versus Vader.

The ultimate monster tag team known as “Big, Bad, and Dangerous” is steamrolling over everyone looking unstoppable. With their hard-hitting offense they are the most dominant tag team in WCW.

Colonel Parker says that The Stud Stable is a Elite stable full of badass wrestlers. The Stud Stable will rule the World by kicking the asses of anyone who gets in their way. Their reputation as a badass is considered
“Off The Scale”.

In a good match, The Stud Stable (Steve Williams, Terry Gordy and Kurasawa) defeated The Armstrongs (Brad Armstrong, Steve Armstrong and Scott Armstrong) in 8:10 when Steve Williams defeated Scott Armstrong by pinfall with a Doctor Bomb. Kurasawa and Miracle Violence Connection make defence number 3 of their WCW World Six-Man Tag Team Championship titles.

Multimillion-dollar free agent Sid Vicious has signed with WWF and joined The Million Dollar Corporation at WrestleMania XI to feud with The Undertaker. He will be working under the name Sycho Sid.

Dustin Rhodes leaves WCW, for WWF. Word is Dustin Runnels, wants a separate identity from his father and has a ongoing family feud with Dusty. Reliable sources claim that Dustin Rhodes’s relationship with his father is on the outs since some point in 1994. The stories on why  change back and fourth. Expect Dustin Rhodes to debut in WWF when his non-compete clause expires.

Mexican promotion AAA has folded, but the promotion will continue. It’s a complicated story but basically, the parent company of AAA is Televisa and they have been hit hard by the Mexican economic crisis and there are massive layoffs taking place and they dropped AAA as a promotion.  AAA still exists as its own company now, no longer owned by Televisa. So expect budget cuts in AAA and more of their stars joining the WCW Cruiserweight Division full time, but at least AAA president Antonio Pena now has full control to make creative and business decisions, which he didn’t have when they were under Televisa.

WCW’s planned UFC-type ripoff event that they were putting together with K-1 in Japan looks to have fallen apart. Due to cable deadlines, they won’t be able to do it in June as planned and now the next earliest available date would be in September, but that’s considered unlikely to happen now too because of the much hyped return of Hulk Hogan and a possible WarGames match between Team Hogan and The Stud Stable that could be a potential money maker for WCW.

Dallas wrestler John Hawk did a WAR show in Japan using the name Death Mask which was a complete Undertaker rip-off gimmick, much like Brian Lee (The Underfaker) did in WWF last year.

There’s been a lot of talk about the future of SMW lately. It’s no secret that the promotion is basically surviving hand-to-mouth and with so many of their up-and-coming wrestlers (Boo Bradley, Brian Lee, Chris Candido, Devon Storm, Eddie Gilbert and Dirty White Boy) leaving recently to join rivals Extreme Championship Wrestling, while key veterans (Dick Slater and Dory Funk Jr.) still is injured and spot shows not drawing well, it’s causing a lot of concern.

Del Wilkes is released and leaves WCW. The bodybuilding legend and pro wrestling star has signed with WWF and is expected to continuing as his masked , heroic alter ego “The Patriot” when his non-compete clause expires!

The Comfort Inn hotel next to the airport in Philadelphia has long been the unofficial hotel for ECW, because Tod Gordon had an excellent relationship with the management there. But after a series of disturbances, the hotel is no longer working with ECW or allowing wrestlers to stay there.

Dr. Zahorian was released from prison after serving about 3 years and is now attempting to get his medical license back. In a newspaper story, Zahorian described his prison stay as “worse than hell” and
claims he was led astray and used by those in the wrestling business.

The Booty Man returns to WCW after taking time off for his honeymoon vacation. Fans can expect “The Original Assman” back on TV very soon.

Eric Bischoff decided to cut loses in WCW and as such, several corporate shakeups have taken place. The Blacktop Bully, Vic Steamboat, Scott Putski, Badd Company (Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond), Magnum T.A., Jim Barnett, Don Sandifer, and Bob Dhue are all no longer with WCW. Word is that this won’t be the last of the budget cuts and expect more heads to roll, on both the corporate side and the wrestlers side.

Sabu doesn’t seem to be having luck with indie show crowds. After being maced by a fan a few weeks ago, another fan threw a brick at him this week during a show.

Veteran Rick Martel leaves WWF after losing the Loser Leaves WWF match against Lex Luger at WrestleMania XI. It is not clear where Martel ends up, but it is expected that we will hear announcements very soon.

TV Guide’s “Cheers & Jeers” column ripped Gene Okerlund over the 900 Hotline “dead former champion” tease from a few weeks ago.

It turns out that Vince McMahon personally wrote a letter to Ted Turner about the “dead former champion” hotline tease, basically telling Turner that he should fold WCW, because the Okerlund thing and the resulting negative coverage in the media.

Big John Studd passed away this week after a 17-month battle with Hodgkins lymphoma.

Bill Shaw has been replaced as the new head of TBS Sports by a guy named Harvey Schiller. His role is more of an overseer and he won’t be very hands on when it comes to making decisions, so the major decisions will still be made by Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan.

AAA wrestler Scorpio Jr. apparently has a hereditary issue that makes him acne prone. He’s super roided up, which makes it even worse and because of all this, his back is “zit city” and when he takes bumps, the zits pop and the blood streams down his back and all over the ring.

There was an interesting incident at the latest ECW show. After a match, Sabu and manager Paul Heyman began challenging anyone to come out and face Sabu. Well the crowd started chanting for a large, 400-pound fan in the front row and it picked up enough steam that it almost looked like the fan was going to jump the rail. Sabu and Heyman were egging the fan on, but he was being held back by other wrestlers and Tod Gordon. After everyone went back to the dressing room, Tod Gordon brought the fan into the ring and put him over with the crowd and gave him some free merch to diffuse the situation. Sabu was in the locker room and reportedly wanted to do a run-in on the fan, but was talked out of it.

A week ago, a Phoenix TV station did a story about The Ultimate Warrior defaulting on his student loans, despite being rich. The Warrior was interviewed by the news station this week and said he was tired of being harassed since the story aired and said he would repay the loans.

Erik Watts did another tryout at the latest WWF tapings this week. Jim Ross is really pushing for them to hire him.

Herb Abrams debt-ridden UWF were last night forced to tap out as the pressure of a financial stranglehold finally became too much to bear. The company has been through a very rough patch, with its death having been predicted for several months now by insiders. Abrams founded the UWF in 1990 with hopes of returning Pro Wrestling back to its roots. He signed top stars as Paul Orndorff, Steve Williams, Don Muraco, Bob Orton Jr, Brian Blair, Dan Spivey, Billy Jack Haynes, Ken Patera, Colonel DeBeers, David Sammartino and Cactus Jack, but struggled to compete with WWF and WCW.

American Maurice Smith began his first reign as Rings Middleweight champion last night, when he won the match against German Ralf Seeger to decide a worthy champion for the previously vacant title.

Dave Schultz claims belt! The vacant Rings Openweight title was claimed last night, as Dave Schultz defeated Tom Howard to win the title.

New Champion in USWA! The vacant USWA World Heavyweight title was claimed last night, as veteran Koko B. Ware became the new champion defeating Doug Gilbert. This victory marks his third reign with the belt. The belt was vacated when Sid Vicious left USWA for WWF.

Riku Choshu began his fourth reign as IWGP World Heavyweight champion last night, when he took the title away from Masahiro Chono at NJPW Fight For Freedom I. Masahiro Chono managed ten successful title defences prior to this defeat.

NJPW held their annual Young Lions Cup last night, and with three successful wins it was Yuji Nagata who claimed the victory. Nagata defeated Naoki Sano, Satoshi Kojima and finally Akitoshi Saito.

WCW signs local wrestler Glenn Gilberti! He has wrestled on the Georgia independent circuit, where he is best known for his time with Great Championship Wrestling where he won several titles. He also have short stints with the World Wrestling Federation and the United States Wrestling Association in 1992. Recently Gilberti has been one of the rising stars of Jimmy Hart’s and Greg Valentine’s Xcitement Wrestling Federation and is a XWF Cruiserweight champion under the alias Disco Inferno.

British Bulldog, Jeff Jarrett and Shawn Michaels are pushed as future main eventers; while Ahmed Johnson, Kama, Hakushi, The New Blackjacks, The Can-Am Express, The Smoking Gunns, The Bodydonnas and Waylon Mercy are pushed as Upper Midcarders. Meanwhile workers like Bastion Booger, The Bushwhackers, Doink The Clown, King Kong Bundy and Typhoon have been phased out.

The lawman turned vigilante Ray “The Law” Traylor ran roughshod over his outmatched opponent, then punished, tortured, and humiliated him after the matches were over just because he’s a punk from New York that deserves it.

In an extremely stiff squash match, Ray Traylor defeated jobber Larry McMahan in 1:01 by pinfall with an Enzuigiri.

After the match, Mike Tenay talks to Ray “The Law” Traylor. Bubba wants Tenay to announce who beat Meng at Uncensored. Tenay does just that, then Traylor brags about winning at Uncensored and calls Colonel Parker and all members of The Stud Stable losers.

Sting is cupping his hands together and yelling “Owwwwww!”

Sting no-sells the jobber’s offense, hulk up, beat chest, Punch, Backhand, Punch, Irish Whip into corner, Stinger Splash and a Scorpion Deathlock.

In an short squash match, Sting defeated jobbe Chris Guy in 1:30 by submission with a Scorpion Deathlock.

The Steiners use a wide array of Suplexes to to dominate their opponents.

In a stiff squash match, The Steiner Brothers defeated Robbie Brookside & Doc Dean in 4:51 when Scott Steiner defeated Robbie Brookside by pinfall with a Steinerizer.

Big, Bad and Dangerous Vignette

An pre-taped in-ring segment in which the WCW World Heavyweight Champion Vader, alongside Bam Bam Bigelow, took on five preliminary wrestlers (T.A. McCoy, Chick Donovan, Mike Thor, Davey Rich and Barry Houston) in a public workout.

Vader and Bam Bam is unleashing a devastating offense and demolishes their outmatched opponents.

After fighting off several of the jobbers, Vader and Bam Bam Bigelow ends up delivering Release Powerbombs to all jobbers on the concrete floor.

Moments later Harley Race and Colonel Parker said the workout was over and ordered the film crew to stop filming.

Chad Fortune & Eddie Golden vs. Kurasawa & Meng w/ Col. Parker

In a hard-hitting squash match, Kurasawa & Meng destroyed jobbers Chad Fortune and Eddie Golden while Colonel Parker struts around like a rooster in a hen house puffing his cigar.

It ended in 1:50 when Meng defeated Chad Fortune by submission with a Tongan Death Grip.

The Lightning Express vs. Harlem Heat

Brad Armstrong and Tim Horner actually gave Harlem Heat a run for their money. 

The two tag teams get into a random fist fight at the start and the crowd gets jacked for it!

Harlem Heat try to get the heat on Brad Armstrong, but Armstrong is resilient and tries a few combination pins to throw them off their game and manages to make the tag to “White Lightning” Tim Horner who has a fantastic workhorse segment with Bodyslams, Dropkicks and even clears house and Harlem Heat reconvene on the outside.

Armstrong eventually gets worked over for a while and rolls out of the way of a Harlem Hangover to make the hot tag. “White Lightning” Tim Horner goes crazy again with fast-paced offense.

Armstrong and Booker T get into a punching match. Stevie Ray picks up Horner to Press Slam him into Armstrong, but Horner turns it into a Sleeper Hold Stevie Ray. Booker T disposes of Armstrong and Stevie Ray bends down with Horner still hanging on with the Sleeper. Booker T hits Super Scissors Kick, forcing Horner to break the hold, and Stevie Ray comes down with the Slapjack.

In a good match with a hot crowd, Harlem Heat defeated The Lightning Express in 6:33 when Stevie Ray defeated Tim Horner by pinfall with a Slapjack.

Up Close

An WCW Up Close segment in which Tony Schiavone conducted a sit-down interview with WCW superstar The Warrior regarding his background, arrival to WCW and discussing the match at Uncensored.

Schiavone is going through the obvious tons of fan mail asking about who, what, where, when, why and how regarding to The Warrior.

We get a special look at The Warrior in a 60 second video of him doing his signature moves while wrestling in Japan.

The Warrior spoke about his career and winning World titles in both America and Japan.

The Warrior then talked about being back in the United States, and said it was no secret as to where he’s been or what he’s done, and that WCW is the premiere wrestling organization.

Warrior also talked about his goals in WCW in which he targetted winning the WCW World Heavyweight title.

The Warrior said that he wanted another shot at “Rocky Mountain Horror” Vader and “The Beast from the East” Bam Bam Bigelow. The Warrior is certain that he will be victorious in the Steel Cage Bunkhouse Stampede Battle Royal and that he will get his title shot.

Randy Savage vs. Paul Orndorff w/ Toni

“Macho Man” shoulder blocks the narcissistic bully “Mr. Wonderful” and delivers a few eye rakes followed by an Atomic Drop. Savage comes off the top to hit a Double Axe Handle.

“Macho Man” Clotheslines “Mr. Wonderful” in the corner and taunts him by calling him “Paula”.

Orndorff received several chants of “Paula” from the crowd.

Orndorff left the ring to join Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan on commentary andprotest the crowd chants and banners  mocking him.

Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel appeared after Orndorff threatened not to wrestle and said Orndorff would be fined if he didn’t wrestle as he initially agreed to do.

Orndorff Punches Savage several times in the midsection. Savage nearly wins with a Sunset Flip, but Orndorff keeps control by going for a Piledriver, but Savage Backdrops Orndorff to avoid it.

Orndorff stomp away on “Macho Man”. Orndorff continues to hammer away on Savage, who has been getting a beaten for quite some time at this point. Orndorff Slams Savage and comes off the top, but Savage gets his boot up!

Savage cleans house and follows up with the Elbow Drop to win the match.

In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, Randy Savage defeated Paul Orndorff in 8:22 by pinfall with a Savage Elbow Drop.

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Steven Regal drew with “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson in 15:00 when the time limit expired.

60,000 people were at the Tokyo Dome to watch the greatest collection of Wrestling Stars to ever appear on the same stage. Every promotion put their best match forward, trying to outdo the other promotions. The show was put together by Weekly Pro Wrestling magazine which gives all the promotions so much vital media coverage that they were afraid to not take part in the show for fear of offending the magazine. But other media outlets didn’t even cover the show because they see the Weekly Pro Wrestling magazine as competition. NJPW had Shinya Hashimoto defeating Masa Chono in the main event. While AJPW had Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi, & Stan Hansen in a 30-minute time limit draw with Akira Taue, Dan Spivey & John Tenta. As for the FMW, Great Nita pinned King Pogo in an “Explosive Barbed Wire” match.

Lawrence Taylor recently lost his job as a sports analyst on TNT and in an ESPN interview this week, he claims he was fired because he’s working Wrestlemania and TNT is owned by Ted Turner.

The Wrestlemania buyrate has come in and has fallen well short of even the lowest expectations.
The show drew a legit 15,000 sellout due to the excellent hype around Lawrence Taylor. The buyrate is somewhere around 0.90 which considering all the mainstream publicity going into it, means Wrestlemania was a complete flop. They had been publicly hoping for at least a 2.0 and didn’t even come close. The Taylor hype helped the entire industry immensely, giving pro wrestling significant mainstream coverage that for once wasn’t focused on a scandal, but those ratings didn’t translate into buys. Some are blaming the higher PPV price that might be a sign that they’ve flooded the market with too many PPVs.

Davey Boy Smith and his wife Diana have responded to the criminal and civil cases brought against them by a man who claims Smith attacked him in a bar for dancing with his wife. Davey Boy claims the whole thing was made up and that there was no fight and Diana says she would never dance with drunken strangers at a bar.

Dusty Rhodes will be inducted into the WCW Hall of Fame at Slamboree in May. There is also talk of inducting Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, but with all the bad blood after leaving WCW for a multi-million dollar WWF contract, that is questionable.

WCW Uncensored did an estimated 0.96 buyrate and with the increase in price, this makes it the most financially successful PPV in WCW’s history. A lot of fans despise Hulk Hogan and his pals. They say he’s killing the company, but numbers don’t lie and the fact is, he’s bringing in more money to WCW than they’ve ever had before.

WWF allowed photographers to be at ringside for Wrestlemania, but then they ended up getting in Shawn Michaels’ way during his match with Razor Ramon, so the policy of allowing photographers at ringside is already over.

Apparently there’s a lot of bitterness in the WWF locker room over how much Lawrence Taylor was paid and all the other NFL players who showed up to stand in LT’s corner (Reggie White and Steve McMichael) and got paid big bucks, despite not doing anything, but standing there.

Tabloid The Star runs a story regarding a confrontation that allegedly occurred between “Mötley Crüe” drummer Tommy Lee and Shawn Michaels backstage at WrestleMania. According to the report, Michaels shot Lee a dirty look, prompting Lee to challenge, “Hey, pal, do you have a problem with me?” Michaels’ response: “No, but you know your girl (Pamela Anderson Lee) was mine before she was yours?!” According to the account, the two men then had to be separated. Anderson Lee’s take on the matter: “Tommy does this all the time. It’s so sweet!”

WWF will be running its final show at Boston Garden next month and are trying to make it a huge event by bringing in legends like Fred Blassie, Jay Strongbow, Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski, Pedro Morales, and more.

It looks like Brian Blair will not be wrestling for a while, as the grappler picked up a Ruptured Spleen during a match last night, and early reports are that it will sideline him from active competition.

D-Von Dudley won the ECW World Heavyweight title last night, when he took the title away from Sabu at ECW Hardcore TV. Sabu managed fourteen successful title defences prior to this defeat.

According to behind-the-scene sources, ECWA owner Jim Kettner and Paul Heyman of ECW are said to have had some angry exchanges over the past week, and for all intensive purposes the two companies are now firmly locked in a state of war. What went wrong is open to speculation, but it will be interesting to see which promotion will make the first attack on their new enemy.

The vacant XWF Cruiserweight title was claimed last night at an XWF House Show, as Chris Kanyon became the new champion.
