The Rock defeats Stone Cold Steve Austin on the October 11th edition of Sunday Night Heat to become the new WWF Champion, thanks to interference from Mr. McMahon, which will lead to Austin challenging Vince to a Street Fight at Judgment Day: IYH, which McMahon gladly accepts. On the previous edition of Sunday Night Heat on October 4th, D'Lo Brown had upset Ken Shamrock to become the new Intercontinental Champion - proclaiming himself the first "Eurocontinental Champion" ever. However, Shamrock is only interested in regaining his Intercontinental championship so this will be the only title D'Lo will put at stakes at the PPV. This show marks also the first inter-gender title match for WWF ever as Taka Michinoku puts the title on the line against newcomer Lita.

The controversial events of Judgment Day: IYH leads to Mr. McMahon vacating the WWF Championship, claiming that The Rock will be unable to defend the title so he sets up a tournament with the finals taking place at Survivor Series. But the joke's on Mr. McMahon when The Rock beats Ken Shamrock on Shotgun Saturday Night on Halloween night to regain the Intercontinental Championship. However, Shamrock & Rock will have to learn to co-exist as they're in the team captained by Austin. The New Age Outlaws regain their tag team titles from the Hardys on Raw on November 2nd and the Hardy Boyz get their rematch. Shawn Michaels makes his in-ring return for Survivor Series, captaining Team DX to take on Team Nation - who have regained a member in D'Lo Brown, who rejoined the Nation but still with one member short as The Godfather turned on the Nation to join The Corporation. Therefore, their match is a 4-on-3 Handicap Elimination match. As it is tradition, several talents work double duty for the show
